**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and self-doubt as I readied myself to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has typically been introverted and quiet, immersing myself in university life seemed like a formidable challenge. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with development, challenges, and considerable enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve gained and the distance I’ve traveled.
### Conquering the Fear of Friendship
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was cultivating friendships. If you are an incoming student, this may be one of your primary concerns as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, a few days prior to the official start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—friends who relate to my experiences and support me throughout this adventure. All it required was stepping beyond my usual comfort zone and initiating small talk with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.
So, what has this taught me? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. If you’re not inclined to jump in immediately, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others abound. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Challenge
Adapting to the academic demands and complexities was another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or doubt your skills when you witness others studying with confidence.
What assisted me in navigating this was the acknowledgment that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re finding certain concepts difficult, others likely are as well. The crucial part is to ask for assistance—whether it comes from your classmates or the teaching staff. Learning to seek help is potentially the most beneficial skill you will acquire during your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They genuinely desire students to succeed and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they fostered open lines of communication with us and offered guidance whenever required.
I did not fully utilize the available pastoral support until late in the year, and I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly beneficial. There are numerous paths to strengthen ties with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway here? Maximize the support systems accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the abundant backing from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while savoring moments of joy and amusement.
As I look back, I recognize how much I’ve developed, both academically and personally. University life may present challenges, but it simultaneously offers a remarkable chance for self-exploration and building connections.
