**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown felt incredibly intimidating. Now, reflecting back, I recognize a year that was not just filled with obstacles but also remarkable personal development, new friendships, and lots of enjoyable moments. So, what insights has this year imparted to me, and what is my current perspective?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was forming friendships. If you are a potential student reading this, you may have similar concerns. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Skipping to the present, I can affirm that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family.
How did this transformation occur? It began with small interactions, like engaging in lighthearted conversation with individuals who were just as apprehensive as I was. I discovered that taking a chance early is a great way to initiate connections. If you’re not ready at the outset, that’s perfectly okay—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, I found that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse crowd at Imperial, you’re destined to encounter those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material was another significant obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your competencies, especially when observing others studying and wondering if you’re lagging behind.
What assisted me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re having a tough time grasping a concept, there’s a good chance others are as well. The most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of seeking help. Whether from peers or faculty members, reaching out for assistance can truly change the game.
### Cultivating Connections with Faculty
On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department have been outstanding. They genuinely care about students’ success and show empathy towards our struggles. They keep communication channels open throughout the year, attentively addressing any concerns we present.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had sought it sooner. Early in the term, I made the decision to become a well-being representative for my year, which enabled me to foster relationships with staff members. This ended up being an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My primary takeaway? Embrace the support and resources available to you—one can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
In reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I experienced—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the plethora of support options from faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to balance the stresses of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey. It’s been an expedition of growth, education, and connections, and I’m eager to see what the next chapter brings.
