**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself enveloped in feelings of anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding the future. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For an individual who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase was intimidating. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich in development, obstacles, and a fair share of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve grown and the progress I’ve made.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the primary obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was establishing friendships. This is often one of the most daunting aspects for many incoming students, and I certainly was not an exception. On my inaugural day in student housing, I spent the entire day cocooned in my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself.

Looking back now, I can say with assurance that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with here have become like an extended family to me. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone to initiate small talks with others who were feeling the same way.

So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is truly worthwhile. If you find yourself feeling hesitant or uneasy, there’s no need for concern—numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet others will arise. Above all, I learned to embrace my true self. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover others who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was the adjustment to the new workload and the heightened difficulty of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It wasn’t always simple to maintain confidence, particularly when I observed others studying and felt as though I was lagging behind.

What supported me through this was the understanding that everyone else was navigating similar difficulties. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were too. The crucial lesson was to learn to seek help—whether from classmates or faculty. I firmly believe this is one of the most vital abilities to cultivate during your first year.

### Encouragement from Faculty

On the subject of faculty, I cannot stress enough how amazing the staff in the Materials department are. They genuinely care about students’ success and empathize with the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept channels of communication open and were always willing to hear our concerns.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until near the end of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Serving as a year well-being representative was one of the brave steps I took at the beginning, and it turned out to be a gratifying experience. It enabled me to foster relationships with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal encounters, getting to know the staff is one of the greatest benefits you can provide for yourself. My main takeaway? Utilize the support that’s available to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt before starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unjustified. There is an abundance of support accessible, both from staff and fellow students, to assist you in managing any challenges.

Most importantly, I’ve realized that I’m never isolated. Whether it’s addressing academic challenges or carving out time for enjoyment among exams and deadlines, there’s always someone there to lean on. This year has been a journey of personal growth, and I eagerly await what lies ahead.
