**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I prepared to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As an inherently shy and introverted individual, plunging into this new phase was well beyond my usual limits. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I realize how much I’ve acquired and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was the prospect of making friends. If you’re a future student, this might be a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes officially began, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships of my life.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—friends who resonate with my experiences and support me throughout this journey. It merely required me to step outside of my comfort zone and engage in small talk with others who were experiencing the same situation.

So, what have I grasped? Firstly, it’s beneficial to take that early leap. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be numerous icebreaking events and chances to connect with others. Secondly, simply be yourself. With such a diverse crowd at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who share your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Another significant hurdle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The shift from A-levels to university was monumental, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more intense. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when observing others studying and thinking they’re ahead of you.

What enabled me to persevere was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult, chances are others are struggling too. The important thing is to ask for assistance—whether from your classmates or the academic staff. Cultivating the ability to seek help is arguably the most crucial skill to develop in your first year.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, I must stress how exceptional the Materials department staff is. They truly wish for students to thrive and are exceptionally empathetic towards the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us and were always ready to assist.

I’ll admit I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. One of the best choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to establish connections with staff members, which turned out to be priceless. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and I strongly advise utilizing these opportunities. My biggest takeaway? Don’t shy away from utilizing the support systems available to you—there’s no such thing as too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

In summary, this year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt before and during university was mostly unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned how to manage stress from exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and fun, and I’ve grown in unexpected ways.

To anyone getting ready to embark on their university adventure: take that leap, face the challenges head-on, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ll discover your niche, just as I discovered mine.
