**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the brink of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into a completely unfamiliar environment was intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with growth, obstacles, and a lot of fun, I can’t help but contemplate the lessons I’ve internalized and the individual I’ve become.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings—it’s entirely understandable. On my first day in student housing, just a few days prior to the term officially beginning, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself to others.

Jump to today, and I can affirmatively state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. The people I’ve encountered here have morphed into a second family for me. All it required was a bit of bravery to engage in casual conversation with others who were experiencing similar feelings.

So, what was my takeaway? I discovered that taking a bold step early on is essential. If you’re not quite ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With a diverse array of people across the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the leap from the first term to the second was even more significant. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re doing enough.

What supported me through these times was the realization that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. The most crucial insight I gained during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from peers or teaching staff, don’t hesitate to reach out.

### The Value of Support

Speaking of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is fantastic. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about student success and are compassionate concerning the challenges we encounter. They maintain open lines of communication throughout the year and are always ready to assist.

I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My primary lesson? Make the most of the support available to you—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during my university experience—was frequently unwarranted. With the backing of staff and fellow students, those feelings became manageable. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone, and it’s possible to relish university life despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of personal development, academic trials, and unforgettable moments. If you’re about to commence your own university adventure, remember to take that leap of faith, seek help, and, above all, be yourself.
