**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who used to be introverted and reserved, stepping into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Reflecting on it now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and countless unforgettable experiences. But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, it’s likely one of your primary worries as well. On my initial day in student housing, mere days before the term commenced, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too daunted to go out and introduce myself to anyone.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. My time at Imperial has blessed me with a second family, not only within my course but throughout the university. All it required was some friendly conversation with peers who were equally as nervous.
So, what did I glean from this experience? I learned that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always beneficial. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others await you. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Challenges
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the academic demands and intricacy of the course content. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. Maintaining confidence was often difficult, particularly when observing others studying and feeling inadequate in comparison.
What aided me in overcoming this was recognizing that everyone else was facing similar difficulties. If there was something I found perplexing, it was likely that others were too. The key lesson I grasped during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether turning to classmates or faculty, reaching out for help is imperative.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely wish for students to thrive and are sensitive to the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open dialogue with us, responding to our inquiries and offering support.
Although I didn’t fully appreciate the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early on, I made the decision to become a year well-being representative, a position that enabled me to engage with staff in a more meaningful way. This experience demonstrated how approachable and supportive they truly are. Be it through official roles or informal interactions, familiarizing yourself with the staff is one of the best choices you can make. My most significant takeaway? Utilize the help and resources at your disposal—there’s never such a thing as too much support!
### Valuable Lessons
In reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the anxiety I experienced prior to beginning university—and even during the year—was often unfounded. With the ample support from faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has equipped me with the ability to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments filled with joy and enjoyment.
To anyone poised to embark on their university adventure: embrace the obstacles, take those leaps, and believe that you’ll find your place. It’s a year of development, and you’ll emerge more resilient on the other side.
