**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was awaiting me. I was on the verge of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was a formidable challenge. In hindsight, I recognize this year as a pivotal period—rich with personal development, obstacles, and a considerable amount of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the university’s outset was forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this may also be a chief concern for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who have become like a second family to me.

How did I achieve this? It all began with small steps, such as engaging in light conversation with others who were experiencing similar feelings. I discovered that taking a chance at the year’s beginning can be rewarding. If you’re not prepared right away, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect with others will arise. Most crucially, I found out that being authentic is essential. With so many diverse individuals at university, you’re sure to connect with those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major hurdle was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, with the shift from the first term to the second feeling even more drastic. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others who seem to have everything sorted.

What helped me through moments of uncertainty was the understanding that I wasn’t in this alone. Everyone was facing similar obstacles, and if I didn’t grasp a concept, it was likely that others were struggling too. The most vital lesson I absorbed during my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether from classmates or faculty, reaching out for help can significantly impact your experience.

### The Value of Staff Assistance

Speaking of assistance, I must highlight how exceptional the Materials Science faculty is. They genuinely care about student success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they kept open lines of communication with us and were consistently ready to lend a hand.

Though I didn’t fully leverage the available pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was an early leap I took, and it proved to be a remarkable choice. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which was invaluable. Whether through formal roles or casual conversations, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is among the best decisions you can make for yourself. My key takeaway? Make the most of the resources and support at your disposal—you can never receive too much help!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my initial year, I’ve come to realize that much of the apprehension I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was largely unwarranted. With the diverse array of support options from faculty and fellow students, there’s almost always someone to reach out to. This year has taught me that I’m never alone, and it showed me how to balance the pressure from exams and deadlines with periods of joy and enjoyment.

Looking forward, I feel increasingly assured and ready for the upcoming challenges. My first year at Imperial has been an evolutionary experience, and I’m eager to discover where the next chapter leads me.
