**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Penned by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was consumed by anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future may bring. I was on the verge of commencing my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had previously been shy and introverted, plunging into such a new and demanding environment felt overwhelming. Now, as I reflect on an academic year filled with development, challenges, and enjoyment, I cannot help but think about the invaluable lessons I’ve encountered and the progress I’ve achieved.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Connections

One of the most daunting components of starting university was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this becomes a significant source of apprehension, and I was certainly among them. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes officially commenced, I spent the entirety of the day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to share that I’ve forged some of the deepest friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who comprehend and uplift me. How did this occur? It all began with casual conversations and bonding with others who were equally apprehensive.

What I have come to realize is that taking that first step is essential. If you’re not inclined to jump in right away, that’s perfectly acceptable—there are ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others throughout the year. Above all, be authentic. With such a diverse community at university, you’re certain to find others who resonate with your interests and values.

### Addressing Academic Obstacles

Adapting to the academic demands and the intricacies of the subject matter was another daunting challenge. The leap from A-levels to university study was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second term proved even more formidable. At times, it was all too easy to feel inundated and question my capabilities, especially when juxtaposed with my peers.

What propelled me through these periods of self-doubt was the acknowledgment that everyone was navigating similar waters. If I found a topic challenging, it was likely that others were grappling with it too. The pivotal lesson here? Don’t shy away from seeking assistance. Whether it’s from classmates or teaching personnel, reaching out for support is one of the most valuable skills to nurture in your first year.

### The Importance of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They truly desire for students to thrive and exhibit understanding regarding the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication and earnestly requested feedback to address our issues.

Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral resources available to me until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the role of a well-being representative early on was one of the significant moves I made, and it turned out to be an outstanding choice. It allowed me to forge strong ties with faculty members, which has proven invaluable.

There are countless ways to interact with the staff, and I highly advise seizing these opportunities. Whether through formal responsibilities or informal encounters, getting acquainted with those who are there to assist you can substantially impact your experience. My greatest insight? Never hesitate to tap into the resources and assistance available to you—there’s no such thing as excessive support.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced before and during university was often unfounded. With the extensive support options available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. This year has taught me to embrace challenges, reach out for help when necessary, and discover joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.

As I gear up for the next phase of my university experience, I feel increasingly confident, resilient, and enthusiastic about the future.
