**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been pretty introverted, stepping into this new phase felt like jumping into the unknown. Reflecting on it now, I can see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and abundant happiness. But what insights has this year offered me, and where do I find myself today?

### Confronting the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating obstacles I encountered at the onset of university was the quest for friendship. If you’re an aspiring student reading this, you may empathize with that unease. On my inaugural day in student housing, just prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too fearful to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I have formed some of the most meaningful friendships I could have hoped for.

What was the secret? Taking that first step of courage. It began with light conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as I was. Gradually, these interactions transformed into profound bonds, and I discovered a second family here at Imperial. My suggestion? Be true to yourself. With such a diverse community at the university, you’re likely to find those who resonate with you. And don’t fret if you’re not ready to jump right in—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another substantial challenge was getting accustomed to the academic demands and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was distinctly perceivable, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others who seem to handle things effortlessly.

What proved beneficial for me was realizing that everyone shares similar experiences. If you’re grappling with a topic, odds are others are too. The most significant lesson I gleaned from my first year was the importance of seeking assistance. Whether it’s from peers or faculty, reaching out can indeed make a remarkable difference.

### Fostering Connections with Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support staff sincerely wish for students to thrive and understand the hurdles we encounter. They foster open dialogue throughout the year and are always prepared to assist.

Even though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had utilized it sooner. One of the best choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can enrich your academic journey. My takeaway? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was frequently misplaced. With the extensive support offered by staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. This year has taught me how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of enjoyment and laughter.

As I progress, I feel thankful for the growth, friendships, and experiences this year has provided. For anyone about to embark on their own university path, keep in mind: take the leap, seek help, and fully engage with the experience.
