**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overtaken by anxiety, apprehension, and doubt about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had previously been timid and introverted, venturing into the unknown felt incredibly challenging. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. The transition to university can feel overwhelming, and for prospective students reading this, it’s likely among your top concerns. On my initial day in student housing, just before the semester officially commenced, I spent the entirety of the day cocooned in my room, too apprehensive to step out and mingle with others.
Now, looking back, I can proudly state I’ve established some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known—friends who genuinely feel like a second family. It simply required me to step beyond my comfort zone and initiate small dialogues with individuals facing the same situation as me.
What have I discovered? Making that first move at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease immediately, that’s perfectly fine! Numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others will arise. Most importantly, I understood that being authentic is the optimal strategy. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to meet individuals who align with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adapting to the increased workload and complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your competence when observing others study and worrying about falling behind.
What helped me persevere during these times was the reminder that everyone else was experiencing similar struggles. If you find something perplexing, it’s likely that others do as well. The crucial point is to seek assistance. This, perhaps, was the most vital lesson I learned throughout my first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates or faculty for help.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, I must say the Materials Science department at Imperial is outstanding. The professors and tutors are genuinely invested in students’ success and are well aware of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open and provided unwavering support.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing it sooner. At the onset of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a Year Well-being Representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are countless ways to engage with faculty, and I highly encourage you to seize those opportunities—it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. My biggest insight here is to fully leverage the resources and assistance available. You can never have too much support!
### Key Takeaways
Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to realize that much of the apprehension I experienced—both before starting university and during the year—was frequently unnecessary. A plethora of support structures exists, from faculty to fellow students, all designed to assist you in navigating difficulties.
This year has revealed to me that I’m never truly on my own. It has taught me how to balance enjoyment with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines. Most importantly, it has been a year of development, where I’ve learned to welcome new experiences and venture outside of my comfort zone.
To anyone about to embark on their university journey: take the plunge, be genuine, and don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. You’ve got this!
