**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overflowing with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was on the horizon. I was primed to begin my adventure as a first-year pupil in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone inherently shy and withdrawn, plunging headfirst into such a major life transition felt overwhelming. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with growth, obstacles, and a plethora of fun experiences, I recognize just how transformative this journey has been. So, what have I gained from this year, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. For numerous prospective students, this poses one of the greatest worries, and I was no different. On my very first day in student accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.

Fast forward to the present day, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever experienced. The individuals I’ve connected with in my program and throughout the university have become like a second family. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small discussions with others who were equally as apprehensive.

What did I glean from this? Taking that first leap of faith at the year’s outset is invaluable. If you’re not prepared or comfortable just yet, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and opportunities are specifically designed to foster connections. Most significantly, I learned to embrace my true self. With such a rich diversity of people at university, you’re sure to encounter others who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the heightened workload and the intricacies of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university life was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term proved even more daunting. Being part of such a rigorous academic setting can sometimes undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short.

What assisted me in managing this was the realization that everyone is navigating similar experiences. If you’re having trouble grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential approach is to seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year—don’t hesitate to reach out to your classmates or the faculty for help.

### The Significance of Supportive Personnel

On the subject of faculty, I cannot stress enough how remarkable the Materials department staff are. They genuinely wish to see students thrive and are fully cognizant of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and exhibited empathy towards our difficulties.

While I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support offered until the latter part of the year, I wish I had sought it out earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the beginning of the year, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. This role enabled me to cultivate strong relationships with staff members, which proved to be incredibly valuable.

There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and I wholeheartedly recommend capitalizing on these opportunities. Whether through formal positions, office hours, or informal chats, nurturing those relationships can significantly impact your experience. My primary takeaway is to leverage the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my inaugural year, I’ve discovered that the anxieties I felt—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—were frequently unfounded. Countless support resources are available, ranging from staff to fellow students, to aid you in navigating challenges.

This year has demonstrated that I am never genuinely alone, even during stressful situations like exams and deadlines. Ultimately, it has taught me how to harmonize diligence with enjoyment, making the most of both the academic and social dimensions of university life.

To anyone about to embark on their university journey: take the plunge, be authentic, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You can do this!
