**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty as I prepared to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, plunging into this new phase felt daunting. Now, as I reflect on an academic year rich with personal growth, obstacles, and unforgettable moments, I can assertively claim it was a life-changing period. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Building Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was the fear of establishing new friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, chances are it’s a concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I found myself cloistered in my room for hours, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to the present, and I can say with pride that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life—individuals who feel like an extended family.
How did this transformation occur? It commenced with minor actions, such as casually conversing with others who were equally new and apprehensive. I discovered that taking the initiative early is beneficial. If you don’t feel ready immediately, there’s no need to worry—numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others are available. Above all, I learned that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse environment at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating Academic Challenges
Adjusting to the academic expectations of university posed another significant challenge. The leap from A-levels to university coursework was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more daunting. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and question your capabilities, especially when observing peers who seem to be excelling.
What aided my perseverance was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a topic, it’s likely others are too. The most valuable advice I can offer is to seek assistance—either from your peers or the faculty. Learning to pursue support is arguably the most beneficial skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to succeed and show understanding towards the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open with us, addressing our inquiries and providing guidance.
Though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support services available until the end of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative was a significant move for me, but it turned out to be one of my best decisions. It allowed me to forge significant bonds with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal roles or informal encounters, familiarizing yourself with your lecturers and tutors is among the best choices you can make for your own benefit. Make sure to leverage the resources and support available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the anxiety I felt before entering university—and even during the year—was frequently unjustified. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I came to realize that I was seldom alone. More importantly, I gained the ability to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while still embracing moments of joy and leisure.
Reflecting on my journey, I recognize how much I’ve evolved since that anxious freshman who sequestered themselves in their room on the first day. University is a voyage of self-discovery, and while it presents its trials, it’s also abundant in opportunities to flourish, connect, and savor life.
