**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Composed by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, apprehension, and doubt regarding the future. I was poised to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had consistently been introverted and reserved, venturing into this new phase was an intimidating endeavor. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with development, obstacles, and numerous enjoyable moments, I can assert that it’s been a life-altering journey. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?

### Conquering the Trepidation of Forming Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered at the outset of university was developing friendships. If you are a prospective student perusing this, you may resonate with that sentiment. On the day I moved into my accommodation, just days ahead of the start of term, I spent the entire time sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to the present, and I am delighted to announce that I have forged some of the most meaningful friendships in my life.

These relationships didn’t blossom overnight; they began with small gestures—such as initiating conversations with others who were just as new and uncertain as I was. Gradually, I discovered a second family during my time at Imperial, all initiated by taking that crucial first step.

So, what’s the moral? Don’t hesitate to step outside your comfort zone early on. If you’re not quite ready immediately, that’s perfectly fine—there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, be true to yourself. In such a diverse environment at Imperial, you are sure to encounter others who share your passions and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the coursework. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more arduous. It’s common to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing others study and wondering if you are measuring up.

What aided me in managing these moments was the realization that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are experiencing the same difficulties. The key is to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Learning to seek help may well be the most beneficial skill you cultivate in your first year.

### The Supportive Faculty

On the subject of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and demonstrate understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept the lines of communication open, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support available until later in the year, I wish I had done so sooner. One of the best choices I made was taking on the role of a year well-being representative. This position not only enabled me to give back to the student community but also facilitated the development of relationships with faculty members—a truly enriching experience.

If there’s a single piece of advice I can offer, it’s to make the most of the resources and support structures at your disposal. Whether it’s academic assistance, pastoral care, or simply getting to know your instructors, don’t hesitate to reach out. You can never have too much support!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the abundance of support from faculty and fellow students, I was never completely isolated. I have learned how to manage the stress arising from exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and enjoyment, and my confidence in myself has increased significantly during this time.

As I ready myself for the next stage of my university adventure, I appreciate the challenges, the personal growth, and the friendships I have forged. To anyone about to begin their own journey, remember: take that leap, be authentic, and don’t shy away from seeking help. You’ve got this!
