**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with a blend of anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding the future. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, leaping into this new phase felt intimidating. Reflecting now, I recognize a year enriched with growth, obstacles, and a lot of happiness. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was befriending others. If you’re a prospective student reading this, it’s probably a concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. These bonds have evolved into a second family for me, both in my course and throughout the university. All it took was stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating small talks with individuals who were experiencing the same uncertainty.

What did I learn? Taking that first step is always worthwhile. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’ll inevitably meet people who share your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another considerable obstacle was adapting to the coursework and the heightened difficulty of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, particularly when observing others studying and wondering if you’re on par.

What assisted me through this was the realization that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re finding something challenging, chances are others are as well. The secret is to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson I acquired during my first year—don’t hesitate to ask your classmates or the faculty for help.

### The Value of Encouraging Staff

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is fantastic. The lecturers and tutors truly care about student success and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year and are always receptive to addressing our inquiries.

Though I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support systems until the latter part of the year, I wish I had taken advantage of them earlier. Initially, I stepped up by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster connections with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable opportunity. There are various means to engage with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Make use of the support available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

This year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before starting university—and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. With the broad spectrum of support accessible from both faculty and peers, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned how to manage stress from examinations and deadlines while also incorporating moments of fun and enjoyment.

Reflecting on the past, I take pride in how much I’ve developed. From confronting my initial anxieties to embracing the rigors of university life, this year has been a transformative journey. If you’re on the verge of beginning your own adventure, remember: take the plunge, seek assistance, and most importantly, stay true to yourself.
