**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was enveloped in anxiety, fear, and ambiguity regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had typically been reserved and introverted, venturing into the unknown felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year rich with personal growth, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences, I can assert that it has been a life-changing journey. So, what have I discovered, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Friendship Challenge

One of the most daunting elements of entering university was the task of forming friendships. If you’re a future student reading this, you might resonate with these feelings. On my initial day of settling into accommodation, just prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to step out and greet my peers. Fast forward to the present, and I’m delighted to say I have formed some of the closest friendships I have ever experienced—friends who feel more like family.

How did I achieve this? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with those who were experiencing the same feelings as me. My main takeaway is this: take that bold step early on. Even if you initially feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied mix of individuals across the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the intensity of the workload and the elevated complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe your peers seemingly excelling.

What anchored me was the realization that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are struggling too. The key is to seek assistance—be it from classmates or teaching staff. Learning to reach out for support is arguably the most crucial skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. The instructors and support personnel are genuinely invested in student success and understand the obstacles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the academic year and are always ready to address our inquiries.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the latter part of the year, I regret not doing so earlier. In the beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to forge connections with faculty members. This experience proved to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your experience. My recommendation? Make the most of the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance.

### Insights Gained

Looking back on the year, I’ve come to understand that the nervousness I experienced—both prior to and during university—was frequently unwarranted. With an array of support options provided by faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has equipped me with the ability to balance the stresses of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and self-exploration.

To anyone gearing up to embark on their university adventure, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel apprehensive. Embrace the challenges, lean on the support that surrounds you, and don’t hesitate to take that initial step. You might be amazed at how far you can reach.
