**Reflecting on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**

*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I experienced a mixture of anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase of life felt like a lot. Now, as I reflect on the previous academic year, I can appreciate how much I’ve developed, the obstacles I’ve tackled, and the enjoyable moments I’ve had throughout. But what lessons has this year imparted to me, and what is my current situation?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share this concern as well. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term started, I spent the whole day hiding in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were in a similar situation.

What did I take away from this? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take that first step. If you’re feeling unsure or not ready, that’s completely fine! There are numerous ice-breaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most crucially, I recognized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the program and university, you’re sure to encounter people who click with you.

### Addressing the Academic Demands

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a clear increase from A-levels, and the transition from the initial term to the second felt even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities when you watch your peers studying and apparently thriving. However, one thing that assisted me was the realization that everyone is navigating similar difficulties. If you don’t grasp something, likely, others are facing the same struggle. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is perhaps the most vital lesson I acquired in my first year—never be afraid to reach out for help from classmates and faculty.

### The Significance of Support

Speaking of faculty, the backing from the Materials department has been outstanding. The lecturers and tutors genuinely aim for student success, and they recognize the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open with us, addressing our worries and providing guidance. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until later in the year, but I wish I had begun earlier.

At the beginning of the year, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my cohort. This position enabled me to form connections with staff members, which has been invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the faculty, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these chances. My key takeaway from this experience is to leverage the support available to you—there’s no such thing as excessive help!

### Closing Thoughts

In summary, this year has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was mostly unfounded. There are countless support systems available, from faculty to fellow students, that can help alleviate those fears. I’ve realized that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve discovered how to balance enjoying university life while managing the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

By embracing the challenges and opportunities that came my way, I’ve matured both academically and personally. If I could impart one piece of advice to upcoming students, it would be this: take the plunge, seek help when necessary, and most importantly, stay true to yourself.
