**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I set off on a journey that was filled with apprehension, fear, and uncertainty. As a new student preparing to pursue my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link), I was entering uncharted territory. For someone who had always been introverted, this felt like jumping into the deep end. Now, reflecting on a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can ponder what I’ve gained and how much I’ve progressed.
### Conquering the Fear of Friendship
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you’re probably concerned about it too. On my initial day in student housing, just days before classes started, I spent a full day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced.
The pivotal moment came when I recognized that everyone else shared my feelings of uncertainty. By simply initiating casual conversations with peers in similar situations, I discovered a second family here at Imperial. My recommendation? Take that first step early. Even if it feels daunting, there will be various icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, stay true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at university, you’re sure to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adapting to the demands and intricacies of the course was yet another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was stark, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and wonder if you’re measuring up.
What helped me was recognizing that I wasn’t the only one experiencing this. If I found something confusing, chances were high that my peers were grappling with it as well. The crucial takeaway here is to seek assistance. Whether it’s from fellow students or instructors, reaching out for help can significantly enhance your experience.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the subject of support, the personnel in the Materials department are truly remarkable. They sincerely want students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained an open line of communication, addressing our concerns and offering guidance.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so sooner. Taking on the responsibility of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the beginning, and it proved to be exceptionally fulfilling. It enabled me to establish solid connections with staff members, which became invaluable. Whether through official roles or informal encounters, getting familiar with the staff is one of the best actions you can take for yourself. Make the most of the resources and assistance available—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
This year has imparted a multitude of lessons. It has shown me that the anxiety I felt prior to starting university, and even throughout the year, was frequently unwarranted. With the vast support system from both staff and peers, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment, and I’ve grown more self-assured along the way.
If there’s a single message I wish to share, it’s this: take that leap. Whether it’s introducing yourself to a new acquaintance, requesting assistance, or stepping out of your comfort zone, these small acts can pave the way for tremendous growth and unforgettable experiences.
