**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Transitioning from my previously shy and reserved nature, stepping into this new phase was indeed outside my comfort zone. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, challenges, and ample enjoyment, I can appreciate the transformative nature of this journey. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Challenge of Friend-Making
One of the most intimidating elements of starting university was establishing friendships. If you are an incoming student reading this, it might be at the forefront of your worries as well. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before the term commenced, I felt so daunted that I spent the day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I have ever known. The individuals I’ve met here have become my extended family, both within my program and throughout the university. It all began with casual conversations and bonding with others who were sharing similar experiences.
What have I taken away from this? That first jump is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be plenty of icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. And above all, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to connect with individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was adjusting to the academic workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was palpable, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more significant. It can be quite daunting or lead to self-doubt when observing peers who seem to be thriving in their studies.
I found solace in the understanding that everyone else is in a similar situation. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, there’s a good chance others are facing the same struggle. The crucial lesson here is to reach out for assistance—whether it’s from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for support is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.
### The Value of Support and Connection
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are sympathetic to the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open communication and addressed our concerns with care.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support options until the year’s end, I regret not engaging with them sooner. One proactive step I took early on was becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to establish connections with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university journey. My chief takeaway here? Make use of the assistance and resources at your disposal—it’s impossible to have too much support.
### Takeaways
This year has imparted the lesson that the unease I experienced prior to and during university was often misplaced. Thanks to the extensive support from both staff and fellow students, I discovered that I was seldom truly alone. More importantly, I learned how to juggle stress from exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and celebration.
In reflection, I recognize how much I have evolved from that anxious freshman hesitant to exit their room. This year has represented a path of self-discovery, resilience, and connection, and I eagerly anticipate what the next chapter will bring.
