**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was about to begin my experience as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and reserved, jumping into this new phase felt quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on the last academic year, I recognize a path of personal development, challenges, and numerous joyful experiences. So, what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered early on was initiating friendships. If you are an incoming student reading this, you may be experiencing similar apprehensions—this is a common concern. On my first day in student accommodations, just days ahead of the term’s official start, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can sincerely say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both in my course and around the university—have come to feel like a second family. All it necessitated was stepping beyond my comfort zone and engaging in small conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
What did I take away? Making that initial move at the year’s commencement is invariably worthwhile. If you feel unprepared at first, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to mingle with others will present themselves. Above all, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the increased workload and complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second proved even more strenuous. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and contemplate if you are keeping pace.
What aided me in this journey was the understanding that everyone is dealing with similar challenges. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, there’s a good chance others are as well. The crucial aspect is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Developing the ability to ask for support may be the most important skill you cultivate in your initial year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors truly wish for students to prosper and are understanding of the challenges we face. They maintain open communication throughout the year, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support offered until later in the year, I wish I had seized it sooner. At the year’s onset, I took a step forward by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to foster relationships with faculty, which turned out to be extremely advantageous. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Utilize the support systems available to you—assistance is always beneficial.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting back, this year has taught me that the anxiety I experienced—both leading up to the start of university and during the year—was often unwarranted. With the broad array of support available, from faculty to fellow students, I was never truly alone. I have learned to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of fun and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a transformative journey of growth, resilience, and exploration. To anyone gearing up to commence their own university journey: embrace the challenges, seek support when necessary, and don’t hesitate to take that leap.
