**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with apprehensions, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what was in store. I was about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Transitioning from someone who used to be introverted and timid to plunging into such a new and taxing setting seemed quite intimidating. However, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and abundant enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was the task of making new friends. For numerous incoming students, this is a major concern about beginning university, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, I spent hours sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had—friends who genuinely feel like a second family.
What shifted? It all commenced with casual conversations. I came to understand that everyone was experiencing similar emotions, equally anxious as I was. Taking that initial step to engage with others made all the difference. If you’re apprehensive about forming friendships, don’t worry—numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with people will come your way. The most crucial aspect is to remain authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Another notable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university academics was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to become daunted or question your skills when you observe others seemingly flourishing.
What assisted me was the realization that I was not alone. Everyone was grappling with the same difficulties, and if I struggled with a concept, the likelihood was that others did too. The essential lesson here? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether from your fellow students or faculty, reaching out for help is vital.
### Fostering Relationships with Faculty
On the subject of support, one of the highlights of my experience has been the remarkable staff in the Materials department. They sincerely wish to see students excel and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open communication and provided various kinds of pastoral support.
I didn’t fully tap into this support until the latter part of the year, and I regret not doing so sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to connect with faculty members, which turned out to be invaluable. There are numerous ways to cultivate relationships with staff, and I strongly suggest utilizing these opportunities. The key takeaway? Don’t shy away from using the resources and support systems at your disposal—they exist to assist you in succeeding.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehensions I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—were often unwarranted. An abundance of support is accessible, both from faculty and fellow students, to help you navigate any challenges. I’ve come to recognize that I’m never truly isolated and that it’s feasible to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and fun.
As I progress, I feel increasingly assured and ready for the future. My initial year at Imperial has been a life-changing journey, and I eagerly anticipate what lies ahead.
