**Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who has always been quiet and introspective, venturing into the unfamiliar wasn’t really my strong suit. Looking back now, I perceive a year brimming with development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights did I gain, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most daunting obstacles I encountered was forging friendships. If you are a prospective student perusing this, you might be feeling similarly anxious. On my initial day in student housing, just a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve created some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who resemble a second family.

What shifted? It all initiated with casual conversation and recognizing that everyone else was experiencing similar feelings. I discovered that taking the initiative early on is the optimal way to break the ice. And if you aren’t prepared immediately, that’s perfectly fine! There are numerous informal events and chances to connect throughout the year. Most crucially, I recognized that being authentic is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you are bound to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Addressing the Academic Adaptation

Another significant challenge was acclimating to the intensity of the coursework and the complexity of the materials. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more drastic. It wasn’t always straightforward to maintain confidence, especially when observing others studying and feeling as though I wasn’t keeping pace.

What assisted me in persevering was the awareness that I wasn’t on this journey alone. If I struggled to grasp a concept, it was likely that others were facing similar difficulties. The most crucial lesson I learned was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or instructors. This straightforward step proved to be transformative.

### Assistance from Faculty

Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The instructors and mentors truly care about students’ success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They promote open dialogue and are always willing to lend a hand.

Although I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had reached out earlier. At the beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me forge ties with faculty members. This became an invaluable experience. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, familiarizing yourself with the faculty is among the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself. My most significant insight? Make the most of the support accessible to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that many of the apprehensive feelings I experienced—both before and during my time at university—were unfounded. There is an abundance of support available, from staff to fellow students, to help you traverse the challenges ahead. This past year has shown me that I’m never alone and that it is feasible to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.

As I progress, I feel thankful for the growth I’ve achieved and the bonds I’ve established. To anyone on the brink of starting their own university adventure: take the plunge, embrace who you are, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You can do this!
