**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and doubts about what awaited me. I was on the verge of starting my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, venturing into the unknown was certainly outside my comfort zone. Reflecting now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered early on was forming friendships. For many newcomers, this is one of the most fearsome aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, it might be on your mind as well. On my first day in student accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the entire time tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to today, and I’m pleased to share that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. All it required was stepping out of my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with those who were feeling similarly.
What have I derived from this? Firstly, taking that leap of faith at the dawn of the year is worthwhile. If you’re not immediately ready, don’t fret—numerous icebreaker events and chances to connect will arise. Secondly, just embrace your authentic self. With such a varied student body at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened difficulty of the content. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and appearing to have everything under control.
What aided me in navigating this was the revelation that we’re all in the same situation. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely others are in the same boat. The essential part is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or professors. Learning to seek help is arguably the most critical skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials Science department is nothing short of remarkable. They genuinely aspire for students to thrive and comprehend the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and displayed understanding toward our difficulties.
I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support offered until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early on, I made a significant move by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to foster connections with staff members. This proved to be an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to leverage the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on my first year, I realize that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was frequently unfounded. There are abundant support systems established, from staff to fellow students, to guide you through the challenges. I’ve come to understand that I’m never truly alone and that it is indeed possible to relish university life even amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
This year has been a transformative journey, and I’m eager to see what the future brings as I progress in my studies in Materials Science and Engineering.
