**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had always been introverted and quiet, immersing myself in such a new setting felt daunting. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a period brimming with development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. What insights did I gain, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects of commencing university was the task of making friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, just days ahead of the start of classes, I remained confined to my room all day, unable to muster the courage to meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships in my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, and it all initiated with simple actions—like engaging in conversations with others who were just as apprehensive as I was.
What did I take away from this experience? Taking that first bold step is vital. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to engage with others. Above all, be true to yourself. Given the rich diversity present in the Imperial community, you’re sure to connect with individuals who share your passions and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the demands of coursework and academic standards posed another considerable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was striking, and the transition between the first and second terms felt even more rigorous. It’s normal to feel daunted or question your capabilities, especially when observing peers who appear to be managing well.
What guided me through this was the realization that I was not alone in my struggles. Everyone encounters difficulties, and if you’re having trouble grasping a concept, likely, others are experiencing the same. The essential takeaway is to reach out for assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. This perhaps became the most significant lesson of my first year: do not shy away from seeking help.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials Science department is exceptional. They earnestly desire for students to excel and show understanding toward the obstacles we face. Over the year, they kept communication channels open and proactively addressed our issues.
I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral assistance until late in the year, and I regret not doing it earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to build rapport with faculty members, which turned out to be tremendously beneficial. Whether through official roles or informal chats, establishing connections with the staff is among the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself. My primary lesson? Utilize the resources and support provided—you can never have too much help.
### Reflecting on the Year
In hindsight, this year has illustrated that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to and during university—was often baseless. There are abundant support mechanisms available, from staff to fellow students, to aid you in navigating challenges. I’ve realized that I’m never truly alone and that it’s feasible to manage stressors like exams and deadlines while still finding joy and enjoyment.
As I look ahead, I am appreciative of the personal growth I’ve undergone and the relationships I’ve formed. For anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure, rest assured that it’s normal to feel anxious—but also recognize that you are entering an environment replete with opportunities to flourish.
