**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I set out on a path filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty. I was about to commence my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and quiet, plunging into this new phase was an intimidating challenge. Reflecting on the year now, I recognize an academic year packed with personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friend-Making

One of the most significant obstacles I faced when starting university was forming friendships. This is a widespread concern for many freshmen, and I was no different. On my initial day at the student accommodation, a few days before the semester kicked off, I spent an entire day in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet new people. Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to say I’ve established some of the best friendships I could have wished for.

These relationships didn’t happen instantly; they began with small interactions—like chatting with others who were just as anxious as I was. Gradually, these bonds developed into a supportive network here at Imperial. My main takeaway? Make that initial effort early in the journey. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous events designed to break the ice and opportunities to connect with others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a varied group at university, you’re sure to find those you click with.

### Addressing the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another major challenge. The leap from A-levels to university studies was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more demanding. It’s all too easy to feel inundated or question your competencies, especially when observing others who appear to have everything under control.

What assisted me through these moments of insecurity was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, chances are others are, too. This is where the importance of seeking assistance becomes evident. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or seeking support from faculty, learning to ask for help is among the most crucial abilities you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Community and Support

On the subject of faculty, I must emphasize the remarkable support network within the Materials department. The lecturers and staff genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. They maintain open communication throughout the year, addressing our issues and providing assistance.

Though I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was a bold decision for me, but it became one of the best choices I made. It allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and I highly encourage taking advantage of these avenues. The support exists—don’t hesitate to access it.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt—both before starting university and throughout the year—was frequently baseless. With an abundance of support from staff and other students, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to manage the stress from exams and deadlines while also cherishing moments of joy and growth.

If I could share one piece of advice with incoming students, it would be this: face the challenges head-on, take those leaps of faith, and don’t shy away from asking for assistance. University is a time for personal development, and with the right approach and support, you’ll emerge stronger on the other side.
