**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxious anticipation as I set out on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who’s always been somewhat introverted and timid, plunging into this new life phase felt quite overwhelming. Now, looking back, I realize it was a year of significant transformation—marked by personal development, various challenges, and numerous unforgettable moments. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the thought of forming new friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you may relate. On my very first day in student housing, I spent the entirety of that day tucked away in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships of my life.
The critical factor was taking that first bold step and initiating casual conversations with others who were experiencing the same situation. As time passed, these exchanges blossomed into substantial friendships, and I genuinely feel like I’ve established a second family here at Imperial. My advice? Just be yourself. With such a varied mix of individuals at university, you are sure to encounter others who resonate with your interests and values. And if you’re not prepared to jump in immediately, don’t fret—there are numerous ice-breaker events and activities designed to help you connect with peers.
### Addressing Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic demands and workload was another notable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university presented a clear contrast, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.
What guided me through this was the acknowledgment that we’re all navigating similar waters. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a topic, it’s likely that others are too. The most valuable lesson I learned throughout my first year was to seek assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Don’t shy away from reaching out; teamwork and collaboration are crucial in thriving within this landscape.
### The Value of Support Systems
Speaking of assistance, the staff within the Materials department have been remarkable. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we face. Throughout the year, they ensured consistent communication and were always open to listening to our worries.
While I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until much later in the year, I wish I had earlier. Stepping into the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to forge connections with staff, which turned out to be invaluable. Whether through formal responsibilities or informal chats, getting acquainted with the staff is one of the best steps you can take for your well-being. My biggest lesson? Utilize the support systems available—they’re there for a reason!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the last year, I’ve come to understand that many of the anxieties I had—both prior to and during university—were baseless. Thanks to the abundant support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year taught me how to juggle the stress of exams and deadlines while still cherishing moments of happiness and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial was an expedition of self-definition and growth. If you’re on the brink of embarking on your own university journey, embrace the hurdles, take those brave leaps, and remember that support is always at your fingertips.
