**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Having always been somewhat introverted, diving headfirst into the experience was definitely outside my comfort zone. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year full of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. But what insights has this year provided, and what’s my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most intimidating tasks I encountered was forming friendships. For many newcomers, this is one of the primary concerns when entering university. On my first day at student housing, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entirety of the day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet anyone.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. All it took was stepping outside my comfort zone and initiating small conversations with others who were feeling similarly.

So, what have I gleaned? I discovered that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always worthwhile. If you don’t immediately feel ready or at ease, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker events and chances to engage with fellow students. Most significantly, I learned that the best version of yourself is simply being yourself. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet people aligned with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the academic workload and the complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more intense. Being surrounded by high-achieving peers can occasionally shake your confidence—you may see others studying and feel inadequate.

What aided me in overcoming this was the realization that everyone is navigating similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are facing the same challenges. The key is to seek assistance. This might just be the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your freshman year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or asking for guidance from faculty, don’t hesitate to inquire.

### The Value of Support

Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how exceptional the Materials Science department is. The faculty members are genuinely invested in student success and are well aware of the hurdles we encounter. They empathize with us and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year to tackle any issues that arise.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. At the year’s onset, I took initiative by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. Numerous ways exist to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My most important takeaway? Utilize the support provided—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the unease I felt—both before and during my university experience—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support networks offered by faculty and fellow students, I came to understand that I was never truly alone. I also learned how to manage the stress of examinations and deadlines while cherishing moments of joy and laughter.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a voyage of self-discovery, personal growth, and building connections. To anyone embarking on their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take that leap, seek help, and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You may just surprise yourself with how much you evolve.
