**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months back, in October 2022, I was engulfed by nerves, apprehension, and uncertainty as I readied myself to start my adventure as a freshman in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being someone who has always been somewhat introverted, stepping into the unknown was quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with growth, challenges, and unforgettable experiences, I recognize how profound this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting hurdles I encountered was forming friendships. Beginning university can feel like a lot, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it might be a major concern for you as well. On my first day in student housing, I spent hours sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most cherished friendships of my life during my time at Imperial.

What changed? It all began with small, casual conversations with individuals who were just as new and uncertain as I. Over time, those brief exchanges developed into significant relationships. I’ve discovered a second family here, and it all commenced with that initial act of courage.

If I’ve gleaned anything from this experience, it’s that stepping outside your comfort zone early on is invaluable. Even if you’re not prepared at once, don’t fret—there are numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied student body, you’re sure to find others who hold similar interests and values.

### Facing Academic Challenges

Adapting to the academic load and rigor proved to be another considerable challenge. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities when you’re surrounded by high-performing peers.

What assisted me in navigating this was understanding that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re having difficulty comprehending something, others likely are too. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the teaching staff. Mastering the art of asking for help is arguably the most invaluable skill you can cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

Speaking of support, the staff in the Materials department have been remarkable. They are genuinely invested in the success of their students and show understanding towards the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication with us and offered various resources to help us excel.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support options until later in the year, I wish I had accessed them sooner. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative allowed me to connect with staff members, which turned out to be immensely gratifying. Whether through formal positions or informal interactions, getting to know your lecturers and tutors can have a significant impact. My biggest takeaway? Make the most of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, it has taught me that many of the anxieties I had prior to starting university were unwarranted. With the abundant support from both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. I’ve learned how to juggle the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of happiness and enjoyment.

Ultimately, my inaugural year at Imperial has been an expedition of growth, resilience, and self-discovery. If you’re about to embark on a similar journey, understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious—but also know that you will find your place. Embrace those leaps of faith, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to rely on those around you.
