**Reflections on My Initial Year Exploring Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was brimming with anxious excitement as I got ready to embark on my journey in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a newcomer in my first year, I was venturing into uncharted territory, a jump that felt overwhelming for my previously introverted and quiet self. Now that I’ve had the chance to reflect on an academic year rich with personal growth, challenges, and happiness, I can clearly see how deeply this experience has influenced me. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting aspects of starting university was the task of making friends. If you’re considering this path, you might share this concern. On my inaugural day in student housing, a few days before classes officially kicked off, I spent the entire day hiding in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.
These connections didn’t appear overnight; they began with small interactions—such as engaging in light conversation with individuals who were equally new to this journey. With time, these bonds evolved into what now feels like a chosen family. My main takeaway? Take the plunge early. Even if you’re feeling hesitant, don’t stress—there will be plenty of icebreaker activities and occasions to connect with others. Above all, be authentic. In such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your passions and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic requirements of university was another major challenge. The shift from A-levels to university studies was quite evident, and the transition from the first term to the second term was even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities when seeing others studying and assuming they have everything under control.
What assisted me in navigating this transition was the understanding that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial aspect is to ask for assistance—whether it’s from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help is arguably the most vital skill you can hone during your first year.
### Encouragement from Faculty and Well-Being Support
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are absolutely remarkable. They truly wish to see students thrive and are understanding of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our issues and providing guidance.
I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until later in the year, and I wish I had started using it sooner. Taking on the role of a well-being representative early was a leap of faith for me, but it ended up being one of the most rewarding choices I made. It helped me foster relationships with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are numerous methods to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Take comprehensive advantage of the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on my first year, I’ve realized that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive support options provided by both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has shown me how to manage the pressures of exams and deadlines alongside moments of joy and self-exploration.
Ultimately, university is just as much about personal development as it is about academics. By welcoming the challenges and opportunities that come your way, you’ll discover growth in ways you never expected.
