**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxieties, fears, and uncertainties about my upcoming journey. I was just about to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had previously been quite introverted, stepping into the unknown felt quite challenging. However, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a time of personal development, obstacles, and unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself now?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting aspects I encountered was making connections with others. If you’re a future student reading this, you may be experiencing similar feelings. On my initial day in student housing, just prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day confined to my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—friends who feel like family.

What led to this transformation? It began with taking small steps—engaging in light conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain. I discovered that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is truly worthwhile. If you don’t feel ready or at ease right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, I learned that authenticity is essential. With the diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major challenge was acclimating to the demands of the coursework and the heightened complexity of the subject matter. The leap from A-level studies to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more intense. It’s common to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when observing others study and questioning your own efforts.

What assisted me during this period was recognizing that we all share similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best approach is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. This turned out to be one of the most crucial lessons from my first year: don’t hesitate to ask for help.

### The Value of Supportive Staff
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely care about student success and empathize with the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing guidance.

Although I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support options available until later in the year, I wish I had tapped into them earlier. Engaging as a year well-being representative was one of the bold decisions I made early on, and it proved to be an enriching experience. It allowed me to cultivate relationships with staff, which became invaluable. There are several opportunities to connect with faculty, and doing so can significantly improve your university journey. My key takeaway? Utilize the support available to you—you can never have too much!

### Insights Gained
As I reflect on this year, I’ve come to realize that much of the anxiety I experienced—both before and during university—was often unfounded. With the extensive support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and satisfaction.

In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a journey of personal evolution, strength, and connection. If you’re on the verge of commencing your own university experience, understand that feeling nervous is completely normal—it’s an integral part of the journey. Take those leaps, tackle the challenges head-on, and don’t hesitate to lean on the support around you.
