**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was engulfed by nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what was ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Dipping into the unknown was not something my shy and introverted self was familiar with. Now, reflecting on the past year, I recognize it as a period of transformation—filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxieties of Socializing
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. For numerous incoming students, this is among the greatest concerns about beginning university, and I was no exception. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to the present, and I can proudly say I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here—both within my program and throughout the university—have become like a second family to me. It all commenced with casual conversation and the realization that everyone else was experiencing similar feelings.
What did I discover? Take the plunge early on. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be a multitude of ice-breaker events and chances to engage with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re likely to find others who share your interests and values.
### Addressing Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the workload and its complexity was another challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities, especially when you observe others appearing to excel.
What aided me was the acknowledgment that everyone is grappling with similar tests. If you’re having difficulty grasping something, there’s a high chance others are as well. The focus should be on requesting assistance—whether from peers or instructors. This is perhaps the most crucial lesson I learned in my first year: don’t hesitate to seek assistance.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
Speaking of help, the staff within the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, responding to our worries and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, I wish I had sought it sooner. Taking on the role of a year well-being representative was a big step for me, but it ultimately turned out to be a fulfilling experience. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Whether through formal positions or informal chats, getting to know the staff is one of the best decisions you can make for your own benefit. My main takeaway? Make the most of available resources and support systems—you can never receive too much help.
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to understand that many of the apprehensions I held—both before and during university—were unfounded. With the abundance of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has equipped me with the ability to balance stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and connection.
Ultimately, university is a journey of development, and the challenges you face present opportunities to learn and flourish. If you’re an incoming student feeling apprehensive, remember that you’re not alone—and that you too will find your path, just as I have.
