**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to commence my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, diving into this new phase was quite daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year filled with growth, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment, I can confidently state it’s been a transformative journey. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most intimidating challenges I encountered at the outset was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be a significant concern for you. On my very first day in student housing, just days before the semester officially commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step out and meet others. Fast forward to today, and I can proudly affirm that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known—friends who feel like family.

How did this transformation occur? It started with taking small steps: engaging in casual conversations with fellow students who were experiencing similar feelings. What I came to realize is that making an early leap is beneficial. If you’re not quite ready at the outset, don’t fret—there will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to connect with peers. Most importantly, I discovered that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who share your vibe.

### Addressing Academic Challenges
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the progression from the first to the second term felt even more stark. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and worrying if you’re lagging behind.

What assisted me in navigating these moments was the acknowledgment that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best piece of advice I can offer is to seek assistance—whether from your classmates or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is perhaps the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of support, the professors in the Materials department are outstanding. They sincerely want their students to thrive and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and provided guidance whenever necessary.

I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support options until later in the year, and looking back, I wish I had initiated that sooner. One of the significant steps I took early on was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to forge connections with faculty members, which proved to be invaluable. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and I strongly encourage utilizing these opportunities. My key takeaway is straightforward: don’t hesitate to leverage the available resources and support structures—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
Upon reflection, this year has imparted a wealth of lessons. Those anxious feelings I experienced—both prior to commencing university and during the initial months—were largely baseless. With the wide array of support available from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. I’ve learned to balance the stress from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.

As I prepare for the upcoming phase of my journey, I feel more assured and ready to confront whatever challenges lie ahead. To anyone on the brink of starting their university adventure: take that leap, embrace your true self, and don’t hesitate to seek assistance. You are more than capable!
