**Reflections on My Initial Year Studying Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was engulfed in nerves, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was ready to begin my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and cautious, venturing into the unknown pushed me far out of my comfort zone. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a journey filled with personal growth, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what have I learned this year, and where do I stand now?

### Conquering the Fear of Making Friends

One of the biggest challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was forming friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might share those feelings. On my first day settling into my accommodation—just a few days prior to the official start of term—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too shy to venture out and meet anyone.

Fast forward to now, and I can proudly say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. These relationships, built both within my program and across the campus, have become like a second family for me. All it took was a little small talk with others who felt similarly.

What did this teach me? Firstly, take the plunge early. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Secondly, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who share your passions and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Transition

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was stark, but I was even more surprised by the intensity increase from the first term to the second. It’s easy to feel daunted or question your capabilities when you observe others studying and start to wonder if you’re doing enough.

What helped me during this period was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re finding it hard to grasp something, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial step is to reach out for assistance—whether from peers or faculty members. Learning to seek help is arguably the most vital skill to acquire during your first year.

### The Importance of Supportive Staff

On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department have been exceptional. They sincerely care about student success and understand the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open with us, addressing our worries and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until late in the year, I regret not taking advantage of it sooner. One of the wisest choices I made was to take on the role of a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to build connections with staff, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal chats, getting to know the staff is one of the best things you can do for your well-being. Make the most of the assistance and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much support!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I’ve come to realize that the anxiety I felt—both before commencing university and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. With the numerous support options available from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone.

Most importantly, I’ve learned how to manage the stress stemming from exams and deadlines while also embracing moments of happiness and personal growth. University is a journey of transformation, and while it presents its challenges, it also provides innumerable opportunities to flourish.

If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, remember: take the leap, be yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ve got this!
