**Musings on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, apprehension, and questions about the future. I was on the brink of embarking on my first-year adventure in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For an individual who has typically been introverted and cautious, plunging into such a major life transition felt daunting. Now, reflecting on a year rich with personal development, obstacles, and happiness, I can assert that it was an enlightening journey. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of commencing university was the fear of forging friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you may relate. I can still picture my first day in student housing—I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too anxious to emerge and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently say I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships in my life.
These relationships have become akin to a second family for me, starting with small, straightforward conversations with fellow students who were equally apprehensive. The most significant lesson I took away? Embrace the leap at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample icebreaker activities and chances to engage with others. Above all, just be yourself. With such a varied blend of individuals at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Adjusting to the academic expectations of university presented another major hurdle. The leap from A-level studies to university coursework was significant, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and doubt your capabilities, particularly when observing peers who appear to be thriving.
What aided me greatly was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The essential strategy is to ask for assistance—be it from classmates or instructors. Mastering the art of seeking help may be the most crucial skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Staff
On the topic of support, the faculty in the Materials department are outstanding. They are genuinely invested in student success and understand the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained constant communication with us and offered numerous resources to assist in overcoming our hurdles.
While I didn’t fully make use of the pastoral support available until near the year’s end, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the outset, I took a courageous step by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to create connections with staff members. This experience turned out to be priceless. There are various avenues to engage with staff, and doing so can significantly enrich your university experience. My most important takeaway? Utilize the support systems available—you can never have too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Looking back on the past year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt before and during university was often unfounded. Thanks to the robust support from staff and fellow students, those feelings are manageable and can be conquered. I learned that I’m never entirely alone, and I’ve figured out how to enjoy myself while tackling the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.
This past year has been one of personal growth, resilience, and happiness. To anyone gearing up to commence their university experience, understand that challenges will arise, but so will the support to help you navigate them. Take the leap, seize the opportunities, and have faith that you will discover your place.
