**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Approximately ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was poised to start my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, plunging into this new phase felt intimidating. Now, as I look back on an academic year brimming with development, obstacles, and memorable experiences, I recognize just how transformative this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?
### Taking the Leap: Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting tasks I encountered was forging friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might experience similar worries. On my inaugural day at student accommodation, merely days before the term commenced, I spent the entire time secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I’m delighted to share that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who share my passions, uplift me, and brighten my days.
What did this teach me? The essential takeaway is to take that leap sooner rather than later. Even if you don’t feel prepared or self-assured, there will be an abundance of ice-breaking events and chances to mingle with others. And above all, just be yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who connect with you.
### Managing the Academic Challenge
Another major challenge was acclimating to the workload and the heightened complexity of the course material. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your skills amidst high-achieving colleagues.
What helped me navigate these times was the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The best guidance I can offer is to reach out for assistance—whether from your fellow students or the faculty. Learning to seek help is arguably the most important skill you can cultivate in your first year.
### Supportive Staff and Pastoral Care
On the topic of support, the staff within the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely aspire to see students excel and are profoundly empathetic to the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the academic year, they maintained open lines of communication, addressing our worries and providing direction.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support until the year’s end, I wish I had done so earlier. At the outset, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative, allowing me to form connections with staff members—an experience that proved immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly impact your experience. My key lesson? Capitalize on the available support. There’s no such thing as excessive assistance.
### Concluding Thoughts
In reflection, this year has illustrated that the trepidation I experienced—both pre- and during my university life—was frequently unfounded. With the extensive support from faculty and fellow students, I came to realize I was never genuinely alone. More importantly, I developed the ability to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and personal development.
To anyone preparing for their own university experience: embrace the challenges, take those courageous steps, and keep in mind that help is always accessible.
