**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and doubt as I prepared to embark on my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). Immersing myself in a completely new setting was not something my introverted and reserved nature was accustomed to. However, reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a period of significant personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendship
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was forming friendships. If you’re among the prospective students reading this, it’s likely a concern for you as well. On my initial day of moving into accommodation—just a few days prior to the official start of term—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet new people.
Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced. These bonds have transformed into a second family for me, both within my program and throughout the university. How did this transpire? It all began with casual conversations and connecting with others who were in similar situations.
What lessons did I derive from this journey? Firstly, take that bold step early on, even if it feels intimidating. If you’re not quite prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to meet others. Secondly, always be yourself. With such a diverse range of individuals at Imperial, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Adjusting to Academic Demands
Another notable challenge was acclimating to the rigorous workload and complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more profound. It’s easy to feel inundated or second-guess your capabilities when surrounded by so many adept peers.
What aided me through this was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp something, it’s likely others are too. The crucial strategy is to ask for assistance—whether from classmates or teaching staff. This may very well be the most pivotal lesson I acquired in my first year: do not hesitate to seek help.
### The Significance of Supportive Faculty
In relation to support, the staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They sincerely want students to succeed and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open channels of communication and were always willing to address our inquiries.
Although I didn’t fully engage with the pastoral support provided until later in the year, I wish I had done so earlier. At the beginning, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to interact with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My suggestion? Fully utilize the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never receive too much assistance!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on the year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced before and at the start of university was frequently unjustified. With the array of support options available—from staff to fellow students—help is always accessible when needed. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve learned how to navigate the pressures of examinations and deadlines while enjoying moments of happiness and leisure.
As I progress, I feel increasingly confident and thrilled about the future. To anyone getting ready to embark on their university journey, remember that feeling nervous is completely normal—but also recognize that you will grow, adapt, and flourish in ways you never expected.
