**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I readied myself to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who has always been quiet and introverted, venturing into the unfamiliar felt daunting. Now, reflecting on the previous academic year, I recognize it as a time of considerable personal development, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Taking the Leap: Building Connections
One of the most daunting elements of starting university was establishing friendships. If you’re a future student perusing this, you might share the same feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days before classes commenced, I found myself spending hours tucked away in my room, too apprehensive to step outside and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can assertively say that I’ve formed some lifelong friendships.
The transformative moment occurred when I made the decision to step beyond my comfort zone and engage in light conversation with others who were also navigating their own uncertainty. Gradually, these interactions evolved into a second family here at Imperial. My greatest lesson? Make that initial leap early on. Even if you’re feeling unprepared or hesitant, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Most crucially, be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to meet individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another considerable challenge. The shift from A-levels to university coursework was stark, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s all too easy to feel swamped or question your capabilities, especially when witnessing others study and fearing you might be falling behind.
What aided me in overcoming these sentiments was the understanding that I wasn’t alone. Everyone is grappling with similar challenges, and likely, if you’re struggling with a topic, others are facing the same issue. The crucial step is to reach out for assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty members. Learning to seek help is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate during your first year.
### Support from Faculty
Speaking of support, the team in the Materials department has been nothing short of fantastic. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication open, responding to student inquiries and providing guidance.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the available pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, I wish I had sought it out sooner. Early on, I embraced the opportunity to become a year well-being representative, a position that enabled me to establish connections with staff. This proved to be invaluable, as familiarizing myself with the faculty not only offered me support but also enhanced my overall university journey. My recommendation? Utilize the resources and assistance available to you—there’s no such thing as too much support.
### Key Insights
Reflecting on the year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I experienced before and during university was mostly unfounded. With the extensive array of support systems present—from staff to fellow students—assistance is always within reach. I’ve discovered that I’m never genuinely alone and that it’s feasible to juggle exam stresses and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
As I progress, I eagerly anticipate continued growth, learning, and maximizing my time at Imperial. To anyone beginning their own university adventure: welcome the challenges, take those leaps, and remember that you’re not solitary.
