**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty as I geared up to embark on my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had consistently been introverted and reserved, venturing into the unknown was well beyond my comfort zone. Now, as I reflect on this past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting components of commencing university was the potential to forge new friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, you might be experiencing similar feelings. On my first day in student housing, just days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can confidently declare that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I’ve encountered here—within my course and throughout the university—have become akin to a second family. It all began with small gestures, like striking up casual conversations with others who were just as new and apprehensive as I was.
What have I learned? Taking that first leap of courage is essential. Even if you don’t feel prepared, there will be ample social events and opportunities to connect with others. Most importantly, just be authentic. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to discover individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the workload and academic demands was another challenge. The shift from A-levels to university was substantial, and the transition from the first term to the second was even more significant. At times, I questioned my capabilities, particularly when I witnessed others seemingly thriving.
What aided me during those moments was the understanding that I wasn’t isolated. Everyone was facing the same hurdles, and if I found something difficult to comprehend, others likely did as well. The key takeaway? Don’t hesitate to seek assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or the faculty, seeking guidance is one of the most important skills to cultivate in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about students’ success and are fully aware of the challenges we encounter. They are approachable, compassionate, and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered to me until the conclusion of the year, and I wish I had started utilizing it earlier. At the beginning of the year, I made a courageous move by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity allowed me to build connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. Whether through formal positions or informal engagements, familiarizing yourself with the faculty is one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself. My most significant insight? Make the most of the support systems available—they exist to help you prosper.
### Insights Gained
This year has shown me that the anxiety I experienced prior to and during university was mostly unwarranted. With the abundance of support from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly on my own. I’ve learned to juggle the pressures of examinations and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
Looking back, I can see how much I’ve evolved—from a timid freshman retreating to my room to someone who has fully embraced the challenges and opportunities of university life. If you’re about to begin your own journey, know that feeling anxious is entirely normal. Just remember to take those leaps, ask for assistance, and be true to yourself. You’ve got this!
