**Insights from My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overcome with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was gearing up to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As someone who had typically been quiet and introverted, stepping into such a fresh and demanding environment was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize a phase of significant personal development, obstacles, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Friends
One of the most daunting parts of commencing university was establishing friendships. If you’re a potential student, this may rank among your foremost worries as well. I distinctly recall my first day in student housing, a few days prior to the term officially starting. I utilized the entire day sequestered in my room, far too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to fellow students.
Now, looking back, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. These bonds have developed into my second family here at Imperial, starting with simple gestures—like engaging in light conversation with others who felt just as anxious as I did.
What did I discover? Taking that first step at the beginning of the year is invariably rewarding. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease initially, don’t fret! Numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with peers abound. Most crucially, just be yourself. With such a vibrant community of students, you’ll surely encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Challenges
Adapting to the academic demands and intricate course content was yet another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was marked, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more intense. It’s easy to experience feelings of being overwhelmed or question your abilities when observing classmates engaging in studying and doing well.
What aided me during this time was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The key is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or teaching personnel. This is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year.
### The Supportive Faculty
Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and tutors sincerely desire for students to excel and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. They foster open communication with us throughout the year, voicing our concerns and providing support.
I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the end of the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the wisest choices I made was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and I wholeheartedly recommend embracing this opportunity—it can profoundly influence your university journey. My major takeaway? Don’t hesitate to tap into the resources and assistance being offered. You can never receive too much support!
### Takeaways
This year has imparted to me that the apprehension I experienced—both before entering university and throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the abundance of support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve gained insight into how to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and enjoyment.
In retrospect, I can see how much I’ve progressed, not solely in academics but on a personal level as well. Beginning university may seem like a plunge into uncertainty, but it’s a leap well worth taking.
