**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was engulfed in anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been introverted and withdrawn, stepping into the unfamiliar was far from comfortable. Now, reflecting on this past academic year, I recognize a time of significant personal development, hurdles, and memorable moments of enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current stance?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the challenge of forming friendships. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might resonate with those feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before the term officially commenced, I spent the entire time cooped up in my room, too timid to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to this moment, and I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had—friends who have become like a second family.
What shifted? It all commenced with casual conversations. I discovered that everyone around me felt similarly apprehensive. Taking that first step to engage with others was pivotal. If this is a concern for you, worry not! The university offers numerous ice-breaker events and activities designed to help you connect with fellow students.
The most significant takeaway? Embrace your true self. With such a diverse array of individuals at Imperial, you’re certain to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Adapting to the rigorous workload and complexity of university-level material posed another major obstacle. The leap from A-levels to university was quite noticeable, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when observing others studying and seemingly thriving.
What assisted me during these moments of self-doubt was the reassurance that I wasn’t in this alone. If I struggled with a concept, it was likely that others were too. The crucial point was to seek assistance—whether from peers or faculty members. This is arguably the most vital skill to cultivate in your first year: never hesitate to seek support.
### The Encouraging Faculty
Speaking of support, the faculty within the Materials department are truly exceptional. They genuinely desire for students to succeed and understand the hurdles we encounter. Over the course of the year, they fostered open lines of communication and exhibited empathy towards our challenges.
I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support offered until the year’s end, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. Taking the initiative to reach out for guidance can have a profound impact. At the beginning of the year, I assumed the role of a year well-being representative, which enabled me to establish connections with faculty members. This was an invaluable experience, and I highly encourage you to seek ways to interact with the staff. They’re present to assist, so make the most of the support available—you can never have too much!
### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this year, I’ve learned that the apprehension I felt—both prior to and during university—was often unfounded. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely isolated. I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of joy and enjoyment.
Ultimately, my first year at Imperial has been a voyage of development, perseverance, and self-discovery. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, remember that it’s completely natural to feel anxious. Take that leap, embrace your authentic self, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. You’ll be astonished at how much you’ll transform and the amazing connections you’ll establish along the way.
