**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty concerning what awaited me. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had typically been introverted and quiet, venturing into uncharted territory was a formidable challenge. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize a time of substantial personal development, obstacles, and memorable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting parts of starting university was establishing friendships. If you’re an incoming student reading this, it’s likely something you’re concerned about as well. I clearly recall my first day in student housing—I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever known.
Imperial has become like a second family to me, and it all began with simple conversations with individuals who were experiencing the same feelings as I was. My most significant lesson? Take that initial step at the beginning of the year. Even if you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreakers and events to facilitate connections with others. Most crucially, just be yourself. With a plethora of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to discover those who share your passions and values.
### Facing Academic Challenges Head-On
Adjusting to the demands and rigor of the course was yet another major obstacle. The transition from A-levels to university was evident, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your capabilities when observing classmates study and wondering if you’re doing enough.
What assisted me in navigating this was the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re finding a concept difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential point is to seek help—be it from your peers or the academic staff. This was arguably the most vital lesson I gained in my first year: don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance.
### The Importance of Supportive Staff
In terms of support, the faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely aspire for their students to thrive and are understanding of the difficulties we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and were always ready to address our questions or fears.
Even though I didn’t fully utilize pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. Assuming the role of a year well-being representative was one of the bold steps I took at the year’s outset, and it proved to be an excellent choice. It enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which became invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and I strongly encourage taking advantage of these avenues. My key takeaway here? Do not hesitate to use the available resources and support—you can never have too much assistance.
### Insights Gained
In contemplating this year, I’ve come to understand that the apprehension I felt—both prior to commencing university and throughout the year—was often misplaced. An abundance of support is accessible, from faculty to fellow students, to guide you through the challenges. I’ve discovered that I’m never truly alone and that balancing enjoyment with the pressures of exams and deadlines is attainable.
This year has been a transformative journey, abundant in growth, resilience, and happiness. To anyone preparing to embark on their university adventure, my advice is straightforward: take the plunge, face the challenges head-on, and don’t be shy about seeking help. You’ve got this!
