**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and reserved, stepping into the unknown felt incredibly intimidating. Looking back now, I can fully appreciate how much I’ve developed over this academic year—a year rich with personal growth, challenges, and numerous unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Friendships

One of the most daunting tasks I encountered at the beginning of university was the process of making friends. If you’re an incoming student, this might also be one of your main worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation—just days before the term officially started—I spent the entire day hiding in my room, too apprehensive to go out and meet others.

Fast forward to now, and I can affirmatively state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life. These companions have become a second family to me, both within my program and throughout the university. What changed? It all began with a simple act of courage—striking up conversations with people who were experiencing similar feelings.

The most significant lesson I took away is that making that initial effort is always worthwhile. If you’re not ready immediately, fret not—there are numerous icebreaker events and opportunities to connect with others throughout the year. Above all, just be yourself. With the vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who share your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the intricacies of the course materials. The transition from A-levels to university was pronounced, and the switch from the first term to the second was even more daunting. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your abilities when observing others study and wondering if you’re keeping up.

What assisted me through this was acknowledging that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re grappling with a concept, chances are that others are as well. The key lies in seeking assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. This could be one of the most beneficial skills you cultivate in your first year.

### The Value of Support

Speaking of faculty, I must highlight just how remarkable the Materials department team is. They genuinely care about students’ success and are empathetic to the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, tackling our concerns and providing support.

Although I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support available until the year’s end, I wish I had utilized it earlier. Early in the year, I took a leap of faith by becoming a well-being representative, which forged connections with staff members. This ended up being an incredibly rewarding experience. There are numerous avenues to interact with faculty, and doing so can greatly enrich your university experience. My recommendation? Fully leverage the support and resources at your disposal—you can never have too much help!

### Reflections Gained

Looking back on my first year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was unwarranted. With the ample support offered by both faculty and fellow students, I was never truly alone. This year has taught me how to manage the pressure of exams and deadlines while also finding joy and fun.

If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, remember that feeling nervous is perfectly fine. But also recognize that you will grow, adapt, and discover your place. Take those leaps of faith, embrace the support around you, and remember to savor the journey.
