**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

A mere ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future held. I was on the verge of starting my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. Being naturally shy and introverted, venturing into unfamiliar territory seemed quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on the past academic year, I recognize it as a time of significant personal development, challenges, and numerous joyful moments. So, what insights did I gain, and what is my current perspective?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Socializing

One of the most daunting challenges I encountered was the task of making new friends. If you’re a prospective student reading this, you might share similar fears about this aspect of beginning university. I certainly did. On my first day in student housing, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too apprehensive to step outside and introduce myself to others. Fast forward to now, and I can confidently say that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships of my life.

These bonds didn’t materialize instantly but began with initial steps—such as engaging in light conversation with others who were just as new and uncertain as I had been. Over time, these connections flourished into what I now cherish as a second family.

What did I glean from this experience? Firstly, don’t hesitate to take that leap of faith early on. Even if you’re not feeling completely prepared, there will be countless icebreaker events and chances to connect with others. Secondly, remain authentic. With such a diverse community at Imperial, you are sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and beliefs.

### Facing the Academic Shift

Another major obstacle was adapting to the increased workload and the heightened complexity of the material. The leap from A-levels to university was palpable, and the transition from the first to the second term presented even greater challenges. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed or question your abilities when observing others studying and appearing to thrive.

What aided me in navigating this was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that others are too. The crucial takeaway is to reach out for assistance—whether that be from your classmates or the faculty. This stands out as perhaps the most vital lesson I learned in my first year: don’t hesitate to pursue help.

### The Encouraging Staff

Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials Science department are exceptional. They genuinely care about students’ success and show understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open, addressing our worries and providing valuable guidance.

Although I didn’t fully embrace the available pastoral support until the year’s end, I regret not doing so earlier. One of my wisest choices was to serve as a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which became incredibly beneficial. Whether through official roles or casual conversations, fostering connections with the faculty is among the best decisions you can make for your well-being. My key takeaway? Make the most of the assistance and resources offered to you—you can never have too much support.

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on this year, I realize that the anxiety I experienced—both before and during my university start—was often unfounded. With the broad array of support systems available, from staff to fellow students, I never truly felt alone. I’ve learned to manage stressors such as exams and deadlines alongside moments of fun and enjoyment.

This first year has been a voyage of self-exploration, growth, and connection. If you’re about to embark on your own university journey, remember that while the challenges you face may appear formidable, they also present opportunities for growth. Embrace the leap, be your true self, and don’t shy away from seeking help—you’ll be astonished at how far you can progress.
