**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I geared up for my first year as a student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who had traditionally been timid and reserved, jumping into such a major life transition felt daunting. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with development, trials, and a lot of enjoyment, I can consider the insights I’ve gained and the progress I’ve made.

### Confronting the Challenge of Making Friends

Making friends at the outset of university was one of the most daunting obstacles I encountered. If you’re soon to be a student, this may be one of your primary worries as well. I distinctly recall moving into accommodation on my first day—I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the best friendships of my life.

These connections didn’t happen instantly, but they started with small steps—like initiating conversations with individuals who were equally new and apprehensive. Gradually, I discovered a second family here at Imperial, both within my program and throughout the university.

What did I learn? First, it’s essential to take that initial leap of faith. Even if you’re not fully prepared to engage right away, there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Second, the most beneficial thing you can do is remain authentic. Imperial hosts a diverse community, and you’re sure to meet people who resonate with your interests and principles.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Adapting to the academic expectations of university was another considerable challenge. The transition from A-levels to university-level courses was stark, and the difference between the first and second terms felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel inundated or doubt your capabilities when surrounded by high-achieving classmates.

What aided my adjustment was recognizing that everyone faces similar struggles. If you’re finding something difficult to grasp, it’s likely that others are as well. The essential step is to seek assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. This may be the most critical skill to cultivate during your first year.

### Assistance from the Materials Department

On the topic of faculty, I can’t stress enough how remarkable the Materials department staff is. They sincerely wish for students to thrive and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they fostered open lines of communication with us, addressing our worries and offering help.

Though I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had started earlier. One of my best choices was to become a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be invaluable. Engaging with your lecturers and support staff, whether through formal roles or informal chats, is one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit.

My key takeaway? Make the most of the support systems that are at your disposal. You can never have too much assistance, and these resources exist for a purpose.

### Gained Insights

This year has shown me that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the abundant support provided by staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to balance the stress of exams and deadlines with moments of happiness and leisure.

Reflecting on my journey from that anxious fresher to my current self has been transformative. University is a time for personal development, and while challenges are unavoidable, they also present opportunities to learn, connect, and excel.
