**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt regarding the path ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a first-year student. Immersing myself in this fresh chapter was a frightening prospect for someone like me, who had always been introverted and quiet. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal development, obstacles, and numerous joyful moments. So, what insights have I gained, and how do I feel today?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting elements of starting university was the prospect of forming friendships. If you’re a potential student reading this, it’s likely one of your major worries as well. On my first day in student housing—just days before the term officially commenced—I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I can say with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships of my life during this first year. The individuals I’ve encountered in my course and at Imperial have become like a second family to me. All that was needed was to step outside my comfort zone and initiate brief conversations with others feeling the same way.

What did I learn? Taking that initial step at the beginning of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared to jump in right away, don’t fret—there will be plenty of icebreaker events and chances to meet others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a varied community at university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with your interests and values.

### Addressing the Academic Obstacles

Another considerable challenge was adapting to the demands of the workload and the intricacies of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s easy to feel swamped or question your abilities, especially when you witness others studying and assume they’re coping better than you.

What assisted me during this time was the understanding that everyone is facing similar struggles. If you’re finding it tough to grasp a concept, there’s a good chance others are too. The crucial point is to seek assistance—whether from classmates or the teaching staff. This may be the most vital skill you can develop in your first year.

### The Encouraging Staff

Speaking of staff, the Materials department at Imperial is outstanding. They truly want students to thrive and are well aware of the obstacles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication lines open with us and showed genuine understanding of our challenges.

I didn’t fully utilize the available pastoral support until the year was nearly over, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. Early on, I made one leap by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate relationships with staff members, which proved to be extremely valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and doing so can greatly enhance your university experience. My most significant lesson from this? Make the most of the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Lessons Gained

As I reflect on this year, I’ve come to understand that much of the anxiety I experienced before and during university was unwarranted. With the abundance of support from both staff and fellow students, those feelings can indeed be alleviated. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone in this journey and that it’s possible to relish university life even amidst the stresses of exams and deadlines.

This year has been one of tremendous growth, and I’m eager to see what the future brings as I continue my path in Materials Science and Engineering.
