**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and apprehension about what was to come. I was on the verge of starting my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been introverted and cautious, plunging into this new phase was a challenging thought. Now, reflecting on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can assert that it has been a life-altering experience. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
### Conquering the Fear of Friendships
One of the most daunting hurdles I faced at the outset of university was forming friendships. This is a significant worry for many incoming students, and I was no different. On my initial day in student housing, just days ahead of the term’s start, I spent the entire day secluding myself in my room, too apprehensive to venture out and introduce myself. Fast forward to now, and I’m delighted to say I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever experienced—friends who feel like a second family.
How did this transformation occur? It began with simple actions, like engaging in light conversations with others who were equally new and hesitant as I was. The essential lesson I discovered is to take that risk early on. If you’re not completely prepared, that’s okay—there are ample icebreaker activities and chances to meet new people. Above all, just be genuine. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Addressing the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was adapting to the demands and academic intensity. The leap from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second term felt even more pronounced. It’s common to feel overwhelmed or question your capabilities, especially when you observe others appearing to excel.
What aided me was the understanding that everyone shares a similar experience. If something is unclear, chances are, others are grappling with it as well. The best course of action is to reach out for assistance—whether from classmates or faculty. Learning to seek help is perhaps the most crucial skill you can acquire in your first year.
### The Value of Supportive Faculty
Speaking of assistance, the faculty in the Materials department are truly remarkable. They genuinely care about students’ success and understand the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they maintained open lines of communication with us and displayed empathy toward our difficulties.
Although I did not fully leverage the available pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. One of the best choices I made was becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved to be incredibly advantageous. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My main takeaway here is to utilize the resources and assistance provided—you can never have too much support!
### Insights Gained
In looking back at this year, I’ve come to realize that many of the anxieties I harbored—both prior to and during university—were unfounded. With the extensive support available from both faculty and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has taught me to manage stressors such as exams and deadlines while simultaneously savoring moments of happiness and enjoyment.
In conclusion, my first year at Imperial has been a path of personal development, learning, and building connections. To any future students reading this: take the plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to seek help. You’ll find your niche, just as I have.
