### Reflecting on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering
*Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was about to begin my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been timid and introverted, venturing into the unknown felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on my experience, I see a transformative academic year—one filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
#### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the earliest and most daunting challenges I encountered was forming friendships. Entering university can be quite overwhelming, and if you’re an incoming student reading this, it might be among your biggest worries as well. On my inaugural day in student accommodation, I spent hours secluded in my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself.
Fast forward to now, and I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the greatest friends I’ve ever known. These relationships have become my second family at Imperial. All it took was some courage to initiate small conversations with others who were experiencing the same feelings.
What did this teach me? Taking that first step of faith at the beginning of the year is rewarding. If you aren’t ready immediately, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to interact with others. Above all, be yourself. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
#### Addressing the Academic Hurdles
Another challenge I faced was getting accustomed to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The leap from A-levels to university was considerable, and the transition from the first term to the second felt even more challenging. It’s easy to become overwhelmed or question your capabilities, particularly when you observe others seemingly excelling.
What aided me during those moments of doubt was recognizing that everyone is navigating the same challenges. If something is unclear to you, there’s a good chance others are grappling with it too. The solution is to seek assistance—whether from your peers or the faculty. Learning to ask for help is arguably the most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year.
#### Assistance from the Materials Department
On the topic of seeking help, I cannot stress enough how incredible the staff in the Materials department truly are. They sincerely want students to succeed and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication, addressing our worries and providing support.
Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had engaged with it earlier. At the year’s start, I took the initiative to become a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to forge connections with staff members, which proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and doing so can significantly enhance your university experience. My key takeaway? Make the most of the support that is accessible to you—you can never receive too much assistance!
#### Insights Gained
Reflecting on this past year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I experienced prior to starting university—and even throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive support available from both staff and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve learned to manage the stress of exams and deadlines while also enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
University is a journey of evolution, and while it may appear daunting at first, it also presents a chance to uncover your strengths, cultivate enduring friendships, and flourish in a nurturing environment.
