**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and doubt about what was to come. I was on the brink of starting my first year in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone naturally shy and introverted, embarking on this new phase felt intimidating. Now, reflecting on a year filled with development, obstacles, and unforgettable moments, I can affirm it was a life-changing experience. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current outlook?
### Conquering the Fear of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the anxiety over making new friends. If you’re an incoming student reading this, you might resonate with these feelings. I recall spending my entire first day in my dorm, retreating to my room, far too anxious to venture out and meet others. A year later, I can confidently say I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve known—friends who have become like a second family to me.
How did this transformation occur? It began with small efforts, such as engaging in light conversations with individuals who were equally apprehensive. My key takeaway from this journey is the value of taking that initial leap of faith. Even when you don’t feel entirely prepared, there will be numerous icebreaker activities and chances to connect with others. Above all, stay true to yourself. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you’re sure to encounter individuals who align with your interests and values.
### Navigating Academic Obstacles
Adapting to the academic demands and heightened complexity of university material was yet another major challenge. The transition from A-levels to university was striking, and the shift from the first term to the second was even more challenging. It’s common to feel daunted or question your capabilities as you observe peers studying and appearing to thrive.
What aided me in overcoming this was the awareness that everyone experiences similar struggles. If you find yourself grappling with a concept, it’s likely that others are dealing with the same issues. The essential strategy is to seek assistance—whether it’s from classmates or instructors. This skill is arguably the most crucial to cultivate during your first year.
### Appreciating Supportive Faculty
On the topic of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is exceptional. The lecturers and support personnel genuinely seek to help students succeed and understand the hurdles we encounter. They foster open communication throughout the year and are always ready to assist.
Though I didn’t fully tap into the pastoral support until later in the year, I regret not doing so earlier. I took a proactive step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to forge connections with faculty members. This proved to be one of the most worthwhile experiences of my first year. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and I strongly recommend capitalizing on these chances. The help they provide is immeasurable, and it’s always beneficial to have support!
### Major Lessons Learned
Looking back on my first year, I’ve discovered that the apprehensiveness I felt—both before starting and throughout the year—was often unwarranted. The support from faculty and fellow students made a significant impact. I’ve come to realize I’m never truly alone, and I’ve figured out how to manage the stresses of exams and deadlines while still enjoying moments of happiness and fun.
This year has been a significant path of personal development, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead as I continue my education. To anyone about to embark on their university journey, my guidance is straightforward: take that plunge, welcome the challenges, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help. You can do it!
