**Reflections on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come. I was on the verge of beginning my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who has always been timid and introverted, stepping into the unfamiliar was quite intimidating. Now, as I reflect on an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment, I can appreciate just how much I’ve gained and how far I’ve progressed.

### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships

One of the most daunting issues I encountered was the task of making friends. Starting university can feel like a significant challenge, and if you’re a future student reading this, you may be experiencing the same feelings. On my inaugural day in student housing, just days before classes officially commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too anxious to step outside and introduce myself to anyone.

Fast forward to today, and I can proudly say that I’ve formed some incredible friendships. Here at Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family, both in my department and beyond. All it required was stepping outside of my comfort zone and engaging in small conversations with others who were equally new and uncertain.

So, what did I take away from this experience? Making that first move is always beneficial. If you’re not prepared or feel uncomfortable right away, don’t fret—there will be numerous icebreaker events and chances to meet new people. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a rich and diverse community at Imperial, you’re sure to find individuals who share your passions and beliefs.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another major challenge was adapting to the workload and the heightened complexity of the curriculum. The transition from A-levels to university was quite apparent, and the shift from the first to the second term felt even more demanding. It’s easy to feel inundated or question your skills when observing peers study and worrying about whether you measure up.

What helped me immensely was reminding myself that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are too. Don’t hesitate to seek assistance—this has been one of the most crucial lessons I learned during my first year. Whether it’s reaching out to classmates or getting support from faculty, asking for help is an essential skill that will benefit you greatly.

### The Significance of Understanding Staff

Speaking of faculty, the Materials Science department at Imperial is remarkable. The lecturers and tutors genuinely care about student success and are sympathetic to the challenges we encounter. They keep open lines of communication throughout the year and are always eager to address our concerns.

I’ll confess that I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral care available until later in the year, but I wish I had jumped in sooner. Early on, I took an initiative by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me forge bonds with faculty members. This experience proved to be invaluable. Many avenues exist to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My biggest takeaway? Don’t hesitate to tap into the resources and support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Looking back, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—was often unfounded. With the extensive support offered by faculty and fellow students, those worries became manageable. I’ve realized I’m never truly alone and have learned how to balance enjoyment with the inevitable pressures of exams and deadlines.

University is a period of growth, and while it can present challenges, it is equally rewarding. If you are about to embark on your own adventure, embrace the experience, take those bold steps, and remember that support is always just around the corner.
