**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty as I geared up to begin my path as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). For someone who had consistently been introverted and cautious, stepping into the unfamiliar was a formidable challenge. However, as I reflect on a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments, I recognize just how impactful this journey has been. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections
One of the most daunting elements of beginning university was the idea of forging new friendships. If you are an incoming student reading this, you may resonate with that concern. On the initial day of student accommodation, a few days prior to the semester, I spent the whole time sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced.

At Imperial, I’ve discovered a second family—individuals who align with my interests and values. All it required was stepping outside my comfort zone and engaging in casual conversations with others who were new to this experience just like me. My most significant lesson? Make your move early in the academic year. Even if you feel unprepared, there will be ice-breaking events and chances to engage with others. And above all, be authentic. With such a vibrant community at Imperial, you are sure to find people who connect with you.

### Facing Academic Hurdles
Adjusting to the demands and complexities of the coursework posed another major hurdle. Transitioning from A-levels to university was significant, and the shift from the first term to the second felt even more pronounced. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed or question your skills, particularly when you observe others studying and appearing to have everything under control.

What aided me was the understanding that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re having difficulty grasping a concept, it’s likely that your peers are too. The essential step is to reach out for assistance—be it from your classmates or faculty members. Learning to seek help may be the most vital skill you can cultivate in your first year.

### The Significance of Helpful Staff
A highlight of my experience has been the outstanding support from the staff within the Materials department. They genuinely wish for students to thrive and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept communication channels open, addressing our worries and providing direction.

Although I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support offered until late in the year, I wish I had embraced it sooner. Taking on the position of a year well-being representative was a significant step for me, but it turned out to be one of my most rewarding choices. It enabled me to forge valuable connections with staff members. Whether through official roles or casual interactions, familiarizing yourself with the staff is incredibly beneficial. Utilize the support available—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained
This year has revealed to me that the apprehension I felt prior to starting university—and even during the year—was often unwarranted. With the extensive support accessible from both staff and fellow students, I’ve learned that I’m never truly isolated. More importantly, I’ve figured out how to balance the pressures of exams and deadlines with instances of joy and fulfillment.

Reflecting back, I perceive a year of personal development, resilience, and unforgettable moments. If you are about to launch your own university adventure, remember that while the challenges may appear overwhelming, they also present growth opportunities. Take the plunge, seek assistance, and welcome the journey that lies ahead.
