**Thoughts on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and self-doubt as I geared up to embark on my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link). As someone who has always been introverted and reserved, plunging into university life was quite intimidating. Now, reflecting on the academic year, I see it has been transformative—filled with personal development, obstacles, and a multitude of unforgettable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself at this moment?

### Conquering the Anxiety of Making Connections

One of the most significant challenges I encountered at the beginning of university was the struggle to forge friendships. Many new students experience this anxiety, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may resonate with you as well. On my very first day in student housing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too frightened to venture out and introduce myself.

Fast forward to now, and I’m pleased to report that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever known. The individuals I met here have truly become a second family. It merely required me to step beyond my comfort zone and initiate brief conversations with others who were also looking to connect.

What did I take away from this? That initial step is always worthwhile. If you’re not ready or feel uncomfortable at first, don’t be disheartened—there will be numerous social events and chances to connect with others. Most importantly, just be yourself. With such a diverse community at the university, you’re sure to encounter those who align with your interests and values.

### Navigating the Academic Shift

Another significant obstacle I faced was adapting to the academic workload and increased complexity of the subjects. The transition from A-levels to university was substantial, and the shift from the first to the second term seemed even more daunting. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed or doubt your capabilities, especially when observing others study and questioning whether you’re keeping pace.

What aided me through this was the realization that I was not alone. Everyone was experiencing the same struggles, and if something was unclear to me, it likely was for others too. The crucial lesson here? Don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. Whether from your classmates or the teaching staff, seeking help is one of the vital skills to develop in your first year.

### Assistance from Faculty

Speaking of support, I cannot emphasize enough how remarkable the staff in the Materials department are. They sincerely want students to thrive and are understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they ensured open lines of communication with us and offered numerous resources to facilitate our success.

I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support available until late in the year, and I regret not doing so earlier. One of the best choices I made was to take on the role of a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to foster connections with faculty members, which proved to be extremely beneficial. Whether through formal roles or informal encounters, getting acquainted with your lecturers and tutors is one of the most advantageous things you can do for your academic journey. My conclusion? Make the most of the support systems afforded to you—you can never have too much assistance!

### Insights Gained

Reflecting on my first year, I’ve realized that the anxiety I felt—both prior to starting university and during the academic year—was frequently unfounded. With the abundant support offered by faculty and fellow students, I was never truly isolated. I’ve also learned how to manage the stress associated with exams and deadlines while still savoring enjoyable moments.

This year has been a path of personal development, and I take pride in the progress I have made. To anyone preparing to embark on their university journey: welcome the challenges, take those bold steps, and remember that support is always close by.
